Mark Arts is pleased to work with Dominic Chambers as the juror of awards for the Abstract National Exhibition. Drawing loosely upon a tradition of contemporary mystical realism, Dominic Chambers (b. 1993, St. Louis, MO; based in New Haven, CT) creates paintings that immediately reference literary narratives cited in books, various mythologies and Black history, both in its oral tradition and written account. His current practice is invested in exploring Black introspection, the Black body, and the construction of lived Black experiences, as seen through moments of quiet contemplation and meditation, reading, leisure, and camaraderie between friends. An avid reader since childhood, literature and the dialectics of language continues to play a major role in both his life and work. In his psychological figurative paintings, Chambers builds a relationship between history, painting, and the imagination to center his respective ideas of where and how to find joy through respite, one that is both real and longed for.

Chambers received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2016 and later, his MFA from the Yale University School of Art in 2019, where he studied painting. He has exhibited both in The United States and internationally, including Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, OK; MIAD Contemporary Gallery, Milwaukee, WI; and the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, Pittsburgh, PA. He has also participated in a number of residencies including the prestigious Yale Norfolk Summer residency in New Haven, CT and the New York Studio Residency Program in Brooklyn, NY.



$3,000 in cash and many Patron Purchase Awards are anticipated. 


Artists may submit any two-dimensional abstract, nonrepresentational works in any media including watercolor, oil, gouache, photographs, acrylics, inks, prints, graphite, etching, charcoal, pastel, collage, pencil, mixed media and others.  Artwork must have been created in the past two years.  Works must be display ready with hardware included. Wrapped canvases are permitted.

The exhibition is open to all artists living and working in North America, both amateur and professional. Work must be ready to exhibit, created in the past two years, and not previously exhibited in a Mark Arts exhibition. Each entry must be wholly designed and executed by the artist. All artwork must be display ready with display hardware included. When appropriate, all work should be framed, matted with white mats, and glazed with Plexiglas. Each artist may enter up to four pieces. All entries must be for sale.



Each artist may enter up to two (2) artworks for the base fee of $30, and any additional image is $5 (4 max). The entry fee is nonrefundable. You may pay on-line with a credit card or via PayPal. Checks and money orders must be made payable to Mark Arts. Mark Arts is not responsible for the loss or damage to any submitted materials. Mark Arts will retain submitted images as part of its exhibition records.



All artworks must be available for sale. A 40% commission is charged on all sales and patron purchase awards from this exhibition. The artist is responsible for including this commission in the price stated on the entry form. Sales tax will be added to the price of the work when it is sold. All entries will be judged from digital images (JPEG format). If upon delivery, an accepted artwork is found to have been misrepresented it may be disqualified. Award winners will be selected by the juror and all decisions are final. Patron Purchase Awards are selected by the individual patrons or their representatives.



Mark Arts publishes an illustrated catalog with all accepted entries. A complimentary copy will be mailed to each entrant.



Selected artworks for exhibition may be shipped or hand-delivered to Mark Arts. All works must be received no later than April 24, 2020. The artist is responsible for all shipping costs and in-transit insurance to and from Mark Arts. Shipped artwork must be sent prepaid in substantial, reusable containers. Instructions and payment for return shipping and a self-addressed shipping label should accompany the delivered artwork. (Prepaid UPS or FedEx label for return shipping is required.) Hand delivered artwork may be brought directly to Mark Arts, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call 316.932.1784 for questions or appointments.



While every care will be exercised in the handling of all works submitted, Mark Arts cannot assume liability for any loss of or damage to artwork in transportation or otherwise.
